Gangireddula, five other communities seek Scheduled Tribe status

ONGOLE: Families belonging to six backward castes staged a demonstration near Prakasam Bhavan here on Monday demanding inclusion of their castes in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

While those belonging to Gangireddula caste came with their decorated bulls, those of Nakkala caste came carrying monkeys on their shoulders. The demonstrators said that they belonged to Mondibanda, Budabukkala, Nakkala, Dommara, Katipapala and Gangireddula castes.

As these castes were classified among 93 backward classes, they get little or no attention from the Government. So they continue to live as nomads facing abject poverty with no houses, health and education facilities. Gangireddula community, for instance, lives by begging. They go round villages with their decorated bulls on the eve of Sankranti and receive alms. These castes urge the Government to include them among Scheduled Tribes.
