NREGS: weekly review meets sought

HYDERABAD: The Panchayat Raj and Rural Development departments will work in tandem for effective implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme through active involvement of local bodies.

In a video conference with the officers of the two departments on Tuesday, Panchayat Raj Minister Botcha Satyanarayana and Rural Development Minister Vatti Vasantha Kumar exhorted them to convene review meeting at mandal-level every Monday to ensure the success of NREGS aimed at preventing migration from rural areas. The performance of the officers would be evaluated and incentives given for good work. Briefing media persons later, Mr.Satyanarayana said that earlier NREGS works were executed under the supervision of Mandal development officer but it was now decided to involve Panchayat secretary, sarpanch at village level for better coordination and transparency.

The District Panchayat Officers, Chief Executive Officers were also told to supervise field level programme and ensure devolution of powers to local bodies’ representatives.

Mr.Vasantha Kumar said that last year works worth Rs.3,000 crore were taken up under NREGS which besides providing work to poor for 100 days also resulted in asset creation for the State. This year Rs.5,500 crore was allotted under NREGS and daily wage was increased in the State from Rs. 80 to Rs.100.

The NREGS scheme would be extended to poor in delta areas for cleaning of irrigation canals, drains, drinking water tanks, cattle tanks, removal of hyacinth etc.
