KURNOOL: Minister for Marketing M. Mareppa has called upon agricultural officials and scientists to impart modern farm management knowhow to the farmers of the district.

Addressing the Rythu Sadassu at the agriculture marketyard here on Saturday, he said the purpose of research was completed only when its results reached farmers.

The Minister said the government was making every effort to revive agriculture in the State.

The latest effort was the successful waiver of agricultural loans amounting to Rs. 1,2000 crore.

Mr. Mareppa said that the government wanted the farmers to take up domestic diary, poultry and ram-rearing for additional income. He further stated that the godowns for storage would be constructed in a big way with the financial assistance of the Centre as the cold storage facility would be playing a major role in future.

Collector G. Balaramaiah said that crop loans worth Rs. 550 crore would be disbursed in Kurnool district. Also, a sum of Rs. 100 crore would be advanced as loans to farmers at three per cent rate of interest. He said 80,000 quintal seed was prepared for distribution this season.

Seed, fertilizer

Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy said the government departments should increase their presence in the seed and fertilizer distribution area so that unscrupulous traders would not exploit farmers.

Legislator M.A. Gafoor who presided over the meeting urged the district authorities to take proper and prompt measures for supply of fertilizers. He said that in the previous year, the shortage of chemicals had badly hit agricultural operations.

Kodumur MLA M.A. Sikhamani, Marketyard Chairman Rambhupal Reddy, Joint Director Agriculture Ravindra Reddy and others were present.
