HYDERABAD: All the three major political players -- Congress, TDP-led Grand Alliance and Praja Rajyam -- expressed confidence of performing well in the elections, which concluded here on Thursday.

Jubilant scenes were witnessed at the respective party offices as enthusiastic party cadres burst crackers and distributed sweets anticipating ‘victory’ in the no-holds barred contest in the State.

It was celebration time in Gandhi Bhavan, the Congress party headquarters, with party workers accompanied by bands bursting crackers. They distributed sweets to the leaders claiming ‘victory’. Women carrying flags and wearing caps raised slogans in favour of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and the party. At a press conference here, APCC spokesperson K. Mruthyunjayam, Rajya Sabha member K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao and general secretary R. Padmaraju said people have backed the good work done by the government in the last five years.

Congress confident

He said out the 140 Assembly and 20 Parliament seats that went to polls in the second phase on Thursday, Congress was sure to win 120 and all the 20 Lok Sabha seats. The NTR Trust Bhavan, the TDP headquarters, was also bustling with activity as party workers came out on the roads and burst crackers and distributed sweets after feedback that the GA would come back to power.

Mr. Naidu exuded confidence that the alliance would win 200 seats comfortably including 105 to 120 in the first phase.

‘King’ Chiru

Similar scenes were witnessed at Praja Rajyam with party workers distributing sweets and bursting crackers. PR chief K. Chiranjeevi in a television interview said that he would be the ‘king’ rather than the kingmaker.

The PR leaders said the high voter turn out clearly indicated that anti-incumbency worked against the Congress.
