Lepakshi in expansion mode

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd has plans to open new showrooms in Guntur, Khammam and here at Banjara Hills, Road No. 10. It will open a showroom at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here in the first week of New Year. V. Venkataramaiah, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, said in a press release here on Tuesday that the corporation was renovating all its emporia to ‘suit the needs of customers’.

He announced the inauguration of the renovated Rajahmundry Lepakshi handicrafts emporium at a cost of Rs.15 lakhs.

The Development Commissioner (handicrafts), New Delhi, has granted Rs.7.5 lakhs. The balance amount has been met from internal resources of the corporation. The Rajahmundry showroom has achieved a sales target of Rs.66 lakhs in 2007-08. It is proposed to cross Rs.100 crores this year. It was found necessary to renovate the showroom to meet the demands of customers, according to the release.

The corporation proposed to introduce in the showroom handlooms of Venkatagiri, Pochamapally, Narayanpet sarees, Chirala, Narayanavaram dress materials and Kalamkari, Pochampally, Jaipur bedsheets. It plans to launch a modern art gallery.
