Left parties hold maha dharna

KHAMMAM: The CPI and CPI (M) organized a maha dharna in Khammam town as part of the State-wide protest against the alleged failure of the Government in providing house sites. Hundreds of workers of both parties took part in the rally that passed through the major thoroughfares before culminating in a massive demonstration at the Collectorate.

The protesters chanted slogans demanding sanction of house sites and white rations cards. Led by CPI (M) district secretary Pothineni Sudarshan Rao and DCCB chairman T.S. Prasad, the CPI(M) workers marched through the streets denouncing government policies.

Addressing the protesters the CPI leader and MLC, Puvvada Nageswara Rao pointed out that lakhs of acres of surplus lands was available and lakhs of eligible applicants were waiting allotment of land, but the Government lacked the commitment.

He said thousands of urban poor were in need of house sites. They had been rallying from pillar to post. There was yawning gap between the words and deeds of the Government. He flayed the UPA Government on the nuclear deal with the US.

CPI (M) central committee member and MLA Thammineni Veerabhadram said in his address that Congress government would have borne the brunt of the global meltdown, but for the responsible role played by the left parties. The Congress Government seemed to have forgotten the fact that it owed its election and existence to the support of the left parties.

CPI district secretary K. Sambhasiva Rao and Burgumpadu MLA Payam Venkateswarlu took part.
