Lagadapati in ACA poll fray

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as elections of office-bearers of Andhra Cricket Association (ACA), the richest sports body in Andhra, is all set to witness a contest for the first time Vijayawada MP and a top industrialist Lagadapati Rajagopal entered the fray on the last day of nominations providing a greater twist to the affair.

It is not for the first time that politician has become ACA president, as P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju and earlier his father the late PVG Raju functioned as presidents but their role was truly honorary and of course, the elections all these days had been unanimous and drew little attention of the people.

But this time Mr. Rajagopal, who is also president of AP Olympic Association, entered the fray as the presidential candidate in the panel of present general secretary N. Venkata Rao who is facing strong opposition.

It is a do-or-die battle for Mr. Venkata Rao and thus the Vijayawada MP has involved himself in the ACA elections that has all the ingredients of political battles he used to face.

This sudden turn of events seemed to have not deterred the rival group as it is confident of winning the elections when voting takes place on July 21. It is confident of securing at least 28 out of the 39 votes to be cast.

This panel has former Ranji captain and present Chairman of National junior selection committee V. Chamundeswaranath contesting as general secretary and S.L. Narayana Row as president.

Mr. Venkata Rao had a set of nominations filed earlier with the present president K.V. Rao and all other existing office-bearers as his candidates and another one with Mr.

Narayana Row as president and with some changes in the candidates for other posts and finally dropped a bombshell on the last day of the nominations by filing another set of nominations with Mr. Rajagopal as the candidate for the post of president and fielding different candidates for some other posts.
