RTC plans to address traffic congestion at bus station

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC, in a bid to ease traffic congestion at Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) premises in Secunderabad, is planning to construct 12 more platforms in addition to the 18 existing ones.

Everyday over 1,000 buses are operated to different destinations from JBS and nearly 45,000 passengers commute from the station. With scarcity of platforms, drivers are forced to wait for parking buses in the bays, hence leading to traffic congestion in the station.

“Owing to lack of sufficient platforms, it is also affecting the time schedule of buses. At times, buses depart 20 minutes behind the scheduled time,” says an official.

This apart, regular traffic jams are witnessed at JBS junction on the Picket main road as drivers wait for their turn to park buses in the station. The situation gets even worse during festive seasons, when more special buses are operated.

Once the new platforms are constructed, it would ease traffic congestion besides helping authorities in operating the services as per schedule. For instance, buses operated to Karimnagar sector can be operated from the new platforms and there would also be more space for passenger amenities, explained another official.

Presently, there is more than half an acre vacant space on the Cantonment side of the station and authorities have already presented the proposal in the corporation budget. Once the funds are sanctioned, works would be taken up, he informed.
