Delays and cancellations leave several passengers fretting and fuming

Hyderabad: The national air carrier, Indian, was forced to cancel international flights being operated from Hyderabad on account of the strike by the ground staff on Wednesday.

The airline had also delayed several other domestic flights, inviting the wrath of hundreds of passengers.

The strike had a full impact on the air operations in the afternoon, as the carrier managed to operate some flights to Visakhapatnam and Chennai in the morning.

The delays and cancellations left many a passenger fretting and fuming.

While the passengers travelling to Dubai and Sharjah had rescheduled their

journeys to later dates, passengers bound for Muscat via Bangalore were the most

inconvenienced lot, as the flight was inordinately delayed.

No choice

“What can I do? I have no choice but to spend the night here,” says Balu, a Dubai-bound construction worker. Several other passengers like Balu were seen rushing to the enquiry office trying to get seats on the next available flight.

Most passengers at the international terminal were stranded. Bojanna, a vendor from Nizamabad, who had come to see off his son planned to return home after the departure of flight. But the sudden cancellation forced both the father and son to stay put at the airport.

“I came to the city this afternoon. But now there is no option for me, except to wait for the next flight,” he said.

“I have to report for work in two days. The striking employees should understand that people spend their entire savings to go abroad for work,” complained Mohd. Ali, who had to take the Sharjah flight.

International flights that were cancelled include IC 951 to Dubai and IC 563 to Sharjah, while IC 977 to Muscat was indeterminably delayed.

The domestic flights

cancelled were: IC 948 to Chennai and IC 840 to Mumbai. IC 941 to New Delhi was delayed by several hours and passengers did not have a clue as to when it would take off, as there was no indication on the notice board.

“We have notified the passengers well in advance about the status of their flights to avoid crowding at the airport,” an official maintained, while passengers said the

opposite.

The agitating employees staged protests against the management for not coming to terms with their demands in view of wages and promotions that were due.
