Hyderabad: The importance of Geographic Information System (GIS) as an integrating technology was highlighted by speakers at the GIS day celebrations held at the Institution of Engineers here on Thursday.

V. Jayaraman, director, National Remote Sensing Centre, ISRO, said GIS had the potential to address all social problems.

He recalled how American sociologist, Stanley Milgram, introduced the six degrees of separation theory in 1967 to show that anyone on the planet could be connected to any other person through a chain of acquaintances. GIS was a part of IT and a day would come when it would become part of everyday life, Dr. Jayaraman said.

I.V. Murali Krishna, retired professor, JNTU, spoke on application of GIS for carbon management under climate change studies. Shelton Swanier and Mark Hardy of Jackson State University, USA, also spoke.
