TIRUPATI: Union Minister for Small Scale and Rural Industries Mahaveer Prasad was on Wednesday closeted with senior officials of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Small Industries Service Institute, Coir Board and other departments. The review meet was to assess their performance and discuss ways and means of improving the handicrafts and rural industries. Later, talking to mediapersons, the Minister said that he already had a similar sitting with the officials of Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala for a first-hand information so that a comprehensive programme to develop the sector could be finalised covering key areas like training, raw material, market study, marketing and so on. Though the craftsmen are talented, their marketing capacity leaves much to be desired, he said. It was here that the Government will have to take up market intervention and provide them with maximum benefits. The Ministry is also exploring the possibility of further tapping the export market for handicraft materials, he said. Many op officials took part in the review meeting.
