Auto drivers threaten to go on indefinite stir from Dec. 31

HYDERABAD: Responding to the auto drivers pleas’ for want of more digital meter sale counters, the Transport Department has decided to operate exclusive counters for sale, fitment and testing of meters at Gymkhana grounds, Hockey Grounds and Mehdipatnam respectively from Wednesday.

At a review meeting headed by Transport Minister K. Laxminarayana here on Monday, it was decided to operate exclusive counters at the above grounds to expedite the installation of digital meters and to avoid inconvenience to auto drivers, said Joint Transport Commissioner B. Venkateswarlu.

Sale counters

To meet the growing demand, the department will be operating exclusive sale counters at Gymkhana grounds, while the fitment and final testing of the meters would be done at Hockey Grounds (Diamond Point) and Legal Metrology office in Mehdipatnam respectively.

“Over 17, 500 auto-rickshaws were installed with digital meters till date and on an average, 1000 meters per day are being installed.

There is no dearth of meters or technicians to fit them and there is no scope for extending the deadline of December 31,” informed Mr. Venkateswarlu.

However, auto drivers insisting on extension of the deadline threatened to go on indefinite strike from December 31 midnight.

“At this rate, it would be tough for the authorities to install the meters in the left over auto-rickshaws within the set deadline. Authorities should extend the deadline or else we would be forced to go on strike,” says Telangana Auto Drivers Joint Action Committee, convenor, Mohd. Amanullah Khan.
