Entertainment avenues like water sports and a resort of sorts are planned

VIJAYAWADA: If there is one thing that the people of Vijayawada sorely miss, it is an entertainment centre. But with the Vijayawada Guntur Tenali Mangalagiri–Urban Development Authority (VGTM-UDA) setting the ball rolling to develop an urban entertainment centre, there will, hopefully, be no dearth of entertainment in the city.

The UDA seeks to construct the entertainment centre on an island near Kanakadurgamma Vaaradhi. The UDA officials, for the last couple of months, have been working on the proposal, and are likely to announce the details in the next 15 days. The officials estimate that at least 100 acres of land is available at the ‘lanka’ (island), which is easily accessible for the residents of Vijayawada as well as Guntur district.

The UDA officials are planning entertainment avenues like water sports and a resort of sorts inside the entertainment centre. However, the focus would be on culture and tradition of Krishna and Guntur districts. “We are planning to present traditional sports like bullock cart races at the entertainment centre. And, music and dance schools would be some of the other attractions for the visitors,” says Y.S.B.S. Vittal, Vice-Chairman, VGTM-UDA.

Modern facilities

The entertainment centre, with all its modern facilities, will be something that the people are looking for. The project would be taken up in Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model once it is finalised. The entertainment centre is likely to be called either ‘Krishnaramam’ or ‘Satavahanaramam’. “However, it has not been finalised as yet. It’s still in a conceptual stage. The project report is being prepared, and we will be able to throw much light on it once the land is handed over to us,” Mr. Vittal says.

The proposed entertainment centre is also expected to enhance the beauty of river Krishna.

The embankment along the river course can be beautified when the project is grounded. There is also a proposal to construct a check dam near the ‘lanka’, so that water could be stored throughout the year.

The check dam also increases the ground water-levels in the vicinity apart from entertaining the visitors.

The UDA officials are digging out all the records pertaining to the land, which falls in the jurisdiction of Krishna and Guntur districts.

They are in the process of taking permission from the Irrigation Department as well as revenue administrations of Krishna and Guntur districts.

Krishna district Collector N. Sridhar visited the area recently and “expressed satisfaction” over the choice of the place and the proposal, officials say.
