Electrocution of boy sparks protest

ANANTAPUR: The death of a teenager due to electrocution allegedly due to influx of high voltage at Mechchiri village in Rayadurg mandal on Monday night led to a series of protests and attack on the divisional office of the AP Transco/CPDCL in Rayadurg town in the district on Tuesday.

According to the information reaching here, faulty power supply to domestic connections in the village allegedly led to influx of high voltage into about 20 homes. Krishna Reddy (15) died of electrocution due to high voltage influx into domestic connections.

The villagers alleged that repeated requests to the lineman concerned and assistant engineer Ravi Kishore to rectify the problem in power supply were neglected.

Activists of All India Students’ Federation and students of several educational institutions took out a procession, staged a rasta roko and dharna in front of the ADE’s office demanding Rs. 5 lakh compensation to the family of Krishna Reddy. As the officials were engaged elsewhere nobody was present there to respond to their plea.

The angry student activists allegedly broke opened the doors of the office and ransacked it. Later, villagers of Mechchiri also arrived at the ADE’s office with the boy’s body and staged a protest for two more hours.

Learning about the information about the protests ADE Rajasekhar and CI Yerikalaiah reached there in the afternoon and pacified the angry villagers assuring them of compensation as per norms.
