International Customs Day celebrated

VISAKHAPATNAM: Commissioner of Customs M. Ponnuswamy has said over 60 per cent of the import consignments are now being assessed and cleared within eight hours. He disclosed that revenue collection was up by 10 per cent when compared to the corresponding period last year.

Mr. Ponnuswamy was speaking at the International Customs Day celebration, organised by Visakhapatnam Custom House, at the VUDA Children’s Theatre on Tuesday.

The theme adopted for the occasion was “Customs and the environment: protecting our natural heritage.”

In his address, he outlined the areas of concern for environmental degradation and highlighted the role played by the Customs in enforcing various environment-related laws.

Visakhapatnam Port Trust Chairman Ajeya Kallam highlighted the importance of spreading awareness about protecting environment and stressed the need for choosing environment-friendly transportation models. He pointed out that environmental crimes were graver than other economic offences as they affected the humans, flora and fauna and life on the planet.

Andhra University Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana said the Customs Department had an important role to play in protecting environment by regulating imports and exports and hazardous wastes and chemicals that polluted air, water and land. He offered the university’s assistance in organizing courses on national and international laws on the subject.

HPCL General Manager (Finance) Naveen Kumar spoke.

As a part of the celebrations essay-writing and elocution competitions were conducted among schoolchildren to create awareness. The winners were awarded trophies.
