Congress gets a drubbing in Adilabad

Congress wins only one seat while the GA bags 8, PR one

Congress wrests the only seat held by the TDP

ADILABAD: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led Grand Alliance (GA) did to the ruling Congress in Adilabad in these elections what the Congress and Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) combine did to it in 2004. The results for the 10 Assembly constituencies and the Adilabad (ST) Lok Sabha seat are a reversal of those recorded in the elections held five years ago.

The Congress managed to win only one seat while the TDP won four and its allies the TRS on three and the Communist Party of India (CPI) on one.

Strangely, the Congress wrested the only seat held by the TDP in the last Assembly.

It was the win of the Praja Rajyam (PR) candidate A. Maheshwara Reddy at Nirmal that was the most discussed subject during the day.

He had defeated Congress strongman A. Indrakaran Reddy in a triangular fight. It was the proverbial slip between the cup and lip for PR candidate G. Vittal Reddy at Mudhole.

Slender margin

He conceded defeat only by a slender margin of 183 votes to TDP’s S. Venguopalachary

Labour Minister G. Vinod’s loss at Chennur (SC) will also rankle the ruling party for long. Similarly, conceding a lead of about 1.15 lakh votes to TDP’s Ramesh Rathod in the Parliamentary constituency should also be a reason for introspection within the Congress ranks in the district.

The TRS had held three seats in the last Assembly and managed to win the same number of seats this time by aligning with the GA.

CPI’s Gunda Mallesh lived up to the expectations as he won from Bellampally (SC) Assembly constituency.

There are two visible causes that accounted for the failure of the Congress party in Adilabad district.

The TDP’s promise of cash transfer and free colour television together with some antipathy towards the sitting MLAs made a considerable dent in its performance.

At Boath (ST) Assembly, TDP’s G. Nagesh came out victorious with a handsome margin of about 31,000 votes.
