Collector warns traders against sale of spurious seed

GUNTUR: Cracking whip on illegal trade practices in spurious seeds in Guntur, District Collector Jayesh Ranjan has warned them that criminal cases would be booked against those involved in illegal manufacturing or trading.

At a review meeting with agricultural officials here on Tuesday, the Collector directed Joint Director of Agriculture A. Ramakrishna Murthy to monitor the functioning of 14 special teams to check illegal trading. All 57 mandals would be covered in three days beginning May 20, he said.

The Collector called for 100 per cent verification of all retail outlets, manufacturing units, seed processing units, transport companies and warned them against any complacency. The district had gained notoriety as a hub of spurious seeds and illegal transport of seeds during the Kharif. The Vigilance and Enforcement sleuths had detected nine cases, including three in Guntur, one each in Tadikonda and Narsaraopet and two in Tenali divisions. The Collector directed the officials to maintain a strict vigil on all the 43 seed processing units in the district. Criminal cases should be booked and cheating charges filed under section 420 against those involved in spurious seeds trading, he warned.
