Check rice hoarding

The denizens of Guntakal have gone panicky as the rice stock has disappeared. This is nothing but an attempt by the traders to hoard the commodity leading to artificial scarcity and sharp rice in price.

Government should intervene and the check this evil as it is the outcome of the government’s order not to sell rice at a higher rate than that ordained by it.

Godavari waters

This refers to ‘Godavari water levels lowest in 150 years-The Hindu, Jan. 23’ attributing the shortage of water supply for rabi crop in the Godavari delta in 2001, 2003 and 2009 due to reduced rainfall and increased water usage in the upstream.

According to the Central Ground Water Board, the unutilised groundwater of the Godavari basin that flows uniformly beneath the riverbed to the sea is estimated at over 25 billion cubic metres a year.

To tackle the shortage is by pumping the groundwater into the delta canals at the Dowleswaramn barrage through high-yielding wells.

Good decision

The government has rightly selected Sister Nirmala for the Padma Vibhushan award for her service to the poor and the destitute.

Her role in dealing with the Orissa violence was exemplary.

Hope she gets many more awards in the future.
