Centre clears four irrigation projects

The Union Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh is said to have cleared four of the nine irrigation projects proposed by the Andhra Pradesh government in various parts of the State after a delegation of six Andhra Pradesh Ministers met him here on Wednesday and made a request.

The lift irrigation projects which have been cleared are Indira Sagar, one project under Telugu Ganga Scheme and two under the Kalvakurthi irrigation project.

Andhra Pradesh Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah said the government also proposed for Union Environment and Forests Ministry's clearance for 15 power projects and two aluminium mining projects and he hoped clearance could be expected within a month or two. These include an atomic power unit to be set up by the Baba Atomic Research Centre in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, he said.

Mr. Lakshmaiah said Mr. Ramesh would hold a meeting with Chief Minister K. Rosaiah on August 19 in Hyderabad to discuss about the projects for which his Ministry's clearance was awaited. Andhra Pradesh Forest and Environment Minister P. Ramachandra Reddy, Rural Development Minister Vatti Vasantha Kumar, Higher Education Minister D.Sridhar Babu, and Major Industries Minister K. Lakshmi Narayana participated in the delegation.
