MACHILIPATNAM: The Marine police on Friday registered cases against the 17 fishermen from Sri Lanka, who were taken into custody from the sea coast near Nagayalanka on Thursday night.

The police registered cases under Section 3 (read with 10) of the Indian Maritime Zone Act, accusing the foreigners of intruding into the Indian waters.

The Sub-Inspector of the Marine police station here, Gouse Pasha, said that the accused, if found guilty by the court of law, could be awarded an imprisonment of three years as per the provisions of the law.

He said fishermen from Sri Lanka were arrested by the Marine police in two instances in the last two years and Sri Lankan diplomatic authorities came to their rescue and took them to their country.
