Alert passengers, citizens can avert train accidents

Campaign taken up in accident-prone zones in district



ANANTAPUR: The Guntakal Division of South Central Railway has taken up a campaign on safety of passengers in trains and safety of general public at the un-manned level crossings.

The exercise has been taken up in the wake of several fire accidents in trains this year.

It was the duty of every citizen to follow safety measures to prevent accidents that could result from human errors.

Though it was not possible to prevent accidents completely a majority of them could be averted with the alertness of passengers and citizens, Divisional Senior Railway Safety Officer E. Subbarayudu said on Thursday.

They were carrying out the campaign at identified locations, which were accident-prone.

Creating awareness among public, passengers and vehicle users crossing railway gates was also a part of the exercise, he stated.

A team comprising Mr. Subbarayudu, Railway Safety Counsellors J. Sreenivasulu, Shiva Reddy and Nagaraju, Traffic Inspector (Tadipatri) C. Aswartha Naik and Station Manager of Anantapur R. Gopal Naik conducted the campaign between Gooty and Anantapur stations.

They cautioned the general public and vehicle users who cross the level crossings to follow the instructions written on the sign boards at the crossings.

They visited Ramarajupalli, Pamidi, Kondapuram, Devarapalli, M.Kothapalli and few other villages located along the railway track between Gooty and Anantapur and created awareness among people.

Prohibited items

On the precautions to be taken to prevent fire mishaps in running trains they suggested passengers not to carry inflammable and explosive material like kerosene, diesel, petrol, LPG cylinders, acids, stoves, crackers and others.

Besides, material like dried hay and leaves should not be used in the packing of luggage and electronic goods having batteries should not be packed along with cotton and clothes, they stated.
