CPI(M) defends tie-up with TDP

VISAKHAPATNAM: CPI(M) district secretary Ch. Narsinga Rao on Saturday justified his party's understanding with the Telugu Desam Party to field joint candidates in the polls.

Lambasting CPI State secretary K. Narayana for criticising their party for having truck with the TDP, he told reporters here that the Congress was their main enemy due to its "anti-people" policies. He said the people were fed up with the Congress regime due to its failure to check price rise and corruption.

He said though they went to the 2004 Assembly polls with the Congress to defeat the TDP and its ally the BJP, the relationship was over after the elections. He said Dr. Narayana had already decided to go to the polls with the Congress before responding to the CPI(M)'s offer for contesting jointly. Mr. Rao said blaming the CPI(M) by Dr. Narayana for their failure to field common candidates was nothing but height of political opportunism. The CPI(M) leader exuded confidence that the TDP-CPI(M) combine would win majority seats in 15 wards where they put up candidates.
