VIJAYAWADA: The city unit of the CPI (M) has asked the ruling Congress to convene general body meeting to discuss the reports that appeared in a section of the media about proposals submitted under ‘JNNURM Plus'.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, CPI (M) floor leader in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) general body Ch. Babu Rao said that the corporation officials were airing various proposals submitted under the second phase of JNNURM, which was expected to be funded by the World Bank (WB).

The officials should have placed the issue before the general body, if any such proposals were there. It was necessary to discuss the conditionalities and modalities of the project, and the Mayor should take necessary steps to convene the general body at the earliest.

Mr. Babu Rao said that the Congress was boasting about development and JNNURM projects sanctioned to the city.

But, in reality there was a gross mismatch between the amount released and sanctioned. While the projects worth Rs. 1,422 crore were sanctioned till date, only Rs. 410.52 crore was released so far. Of this, Rs. 172 crores was related to housing, which was inevitably the State government's subject.

As a result, only Rs. 238 crores was released for infrastructure as against total sanction of Rs. 769 crores.
