Bus passenger killed in accident

VIJAYAWADA: A 58-year-old bank employee coming from Tenali in an APSRTC bus died of the injuries he received along with many passengers, when the bus rammed into a lorry on Kanakadurgamma Vaaradhi late on Friday night. The victim was identified as B.V. Subba Rao, an audit officer with the State Bank of India’s Hyderabad office.

In all, 20 persons escaped with injuries in the accident, which occurred around 11.30 p.m. The bus hit a lorry on the bridge when passengers were fast asleep.

Besides Mr. Rao, bus driver Venkata Rao and 10 passengers sustained severe injuries and 10 others escaped with minor injuries. The police rushed the injured to the Government General Hospital, where Rao died at 2 a.m. on Saturday. The condition of the other injured persons was said to be stable. The Tadepalli police registered a case.

Two arrested

The Anti-Goonda Squad of the city police on Saturday arrested two persons on the charge of resorting to cricket betting over the result of Test match between India and Australia.

They seized a colour television, eight mobile phones and Rs. 40,000 from them. Following a tip-off, the police raided a house near Jammichettu centre in Moghalrajapuram. They arrested U. Lakshmipathi Raju and Srinivasa Rao.
