BJP for probe into land encroachment

HYDERABAD: The BJP has demanded setting up of a high-level panel to unearth details of the encroached assigned, Wakf, inam and tenancy lands in the city and its surrounding areas and publish a white paper on the issue.

At a press conference here on Sunday, party leaders Ch. Vidyasagar Rao and Ch. Sambamurthy urged the Government to prohibit transfer of lands in Telangana till the committee comes out with details. The Government should then distribute the available land to the poor, he said.

They charged Ranga Reddy district Collector with providing “vague” information after a status report was sought on assigned lands under the Right to Information Act. While 18,647 acres was resumed, 8,710 acres was allotted for ‘public purpose’. However, the ‘public purpose’ was not specified. They demanded action against the Collector and Revenue officials for not ‘giving proper information’. The leaders said the party had started a signature campaign in Telangana seeking equitable distribution of water, waiver of all farmers’ debts, distribution of land to the poor and official celebration of the Hyderabad Liberation Day on September 17 each year. A representation containing the signatures will be submitted to President Pratibha Patil by the end of January next.
