BDL unit to be operational in a year

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Hyderabad-based Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a Ministry of Defence enterprise, is setting up a production unit in the city.

Naval Science and Technological Laboratory Director V. Bhujanga Rao told reporters on Tuesday after inauguration of an exhibition that BDL had already acquired a site at Autonagar and the operation was likely to begin within six months to one year.

He said lightweight torpedoes designed and developed by NSTL were now being produced for the Navy by BDL.

On designing stealth ships, he said now research and designing was going on at NSTL. He said infrared, radar magnetic, acoustic and other aspects were being studied thoroughly. As far as visual aspects were concerned, the ships would be painted in such a way to escape getting photographed by satellite-borne cameras. Even if they were caught, they would resemble the background of the sea, he stated.

Underlining the role of sounds in underwater communications, he said NSTL was also contributing in a big way in developing acoustic technologies. He said NSTL was trying to optimise easy operation, cost and fuel efficiency during designing of submersibles, torpedoes, mines and underwater vehicles and stealth technologies.

New courses

Earlier, at a symposium, Andhra University Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana said they would soon start B.Tech in sound technology. He said they were interested to start a diploma course in naval architecture after passing engineering and hoped that the Navy and NSTL would give the permission for extending their support. He said AU was also contemplating starting aircraft engineering and space technology.
