Minister directs official to redesign units that provide basic needs

Srikakulam: An awareness programme on the Rajiv Swagruha Housing Corporation was organised here on Sunday by Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the corporation Shalini Mishra in the presence of Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao.

Hundreds of applicants of Rajiv Swagruha housing scheme expressed disappointment at the exorbitant prices of the houses.

Beneficiaries’ plea

The beneficiaries urged the CMD to minimise the cost by providing basic facilities. The beneficiaries maintained that if the authorities designed the houses on corporate lines and gave priority to extravaganza and ambience, the very purpose of scheme meant for the middle class would be defeated.

Maximum cost

Mr. Prasada Rao asked Ms. Shalini to redesign the housing scheme as far as Srikakulam was concerned and ensure that the projected cost of different categories did not go beyond Rs.10 lakhs.

Ms. Shalini assured the Minister to come back with revised proposals so that maximum number of people could benefit from the scheme.

Categories

The corporation designed four categories of housing units, including classic houses measuring 1,450 square feet and costing Rs.23 lakhs. Similarly, intrinsic houses measuring 1,150 square feet cost Rs.11.54 lakhs each, basic houses measuring 685 square feet cost 18.05 lakhs each and civic houses (single bedroom) measuring 400 square feet cost Rs.7 lakhs each.

Completion time

The project would be executed in 18 months from the time of its commencement. Some One hundred acres of land was allotted for the scheme at Etcherla in the district. Technical director Radhakrishna, district Collector N. Srikanth, Municipal Chair-person M.V. Padmavathi were present.
