Harassment by recovery agents alleged

Hyderabad: An auto-rickshaw driver Naresh, 32, committed suicide by consuming poison in his house at Vinayaknagar of Neredemet on Friday night, the police said.

His wife Sukanya, in her complaint with the Neredmet police on Saturday, alleged that her husband ended his life after some bank loan recovery agents humiliated him before his father accusing him of failing to repay loans. Inspector A. Balakoti said a case of suspicious death under section 174 of Criminal Procedure Code was registered.

“We’re investigating into the angle of harassment by the loan recovery agents. If evidence is found, a separate case would be registered against them,” he said. An ex-serviceman’s son, Naresh reportedly availed personal loans from five private banks and financial institutions. The loan amounts ranged from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000.

Since he failed to pay the instalments, some recovery agents had been regularly coming to his house for the past few days and insisting on payment of the loan. Naresh paid the instalments when the agents of a bank and a private finance firm met him three days ago. On Friday morning, an agent of GE Money approached him and demanded that he clear the personal loan he had availed.

The auto-rickshaw driver’s father did not know about the loans his son availed. It was alleged that Naresh felt humiliated as he was grilled in front of his father about the loan and committed suicide in the night by consuming poison, the Inspector said.
