Rajahmundry: All is set for the technical launch of Third Generation (3G) phones by BSNL by January 30. It is a long wait for customers to have value-added services from BSNL which is postponing the date.

At last, 25 Base Transmitting Stations (BTS) are ready to radiate signals out of 35 stations already erected. In addition to this, another 15 BTS are ready to work along with the railway track between Rajahmundry and Tuni in the next few days. Meanwhile, the BSNL launched Mobile Number Portability (MNP) on Monday.

In an exclusive interview with The Hindu, G. Raghavendra Rao, General Manager, BSNL, East Godavari, G.V. Manoj Kumar, DGM (A and P) and V.H.V.R.L.N. Varaprasad (DGM-Cellone) said that this was the first time that 3G services were being launched in Rajahmundry and Kakinada simultaneously in the State.

According to Mr. Varaprasad, the 3G phones would have 2 Mbps speed, video calling facility which would enable one to speak to the other face to face.

“At lightning speed you can get broadband connectivity to your phone, you can watch your favourite TV channel live in mobile, download videos of your choice and full track music downloads are possible. You can take your business to next level with video conferencing service through 3G phones and Online gaming is another thrilling experience that any one can have through this facility.”

“The procedure is simple. BSNL has introduced incoming free offer and came out with attractive tariff package. To increase RAM memory in your present mobile or purchase new phone with 3G compatibility, one has to get USIM card costing Rs. 59 from BSNL.

The new offer for pre-paid customers will give 25 MB data download free of cost and 50 minutes video calls also free.

New plan tariff with Rs.120 package in pre-paid is with 180 days validity and with Rs.20 free usage. In this package voice calls and video calls will be 30 paise per minute instead of 50 paise and Re. 1 respectively.”

All the users were presently using 2G phones and if they want to convert into 3G they should change the settings and phone network also should be changed to UMTS option or Dual Mode option and not GSM, they said.

MNP facility

Along with 3G phones, East Godavari is ahead of other districts in providing Mobile Number Portability (MNP).

Mr. Manoj Kumar said that with the existing number any customer can change his operator.

For example any Airtel customer can change as BSNL customer with his Airtel number.

Any customer who opts for MNP should stay back at least for 90 days with changed operator. If he wants to cancel MNP option, the limit was only 24 hours.

For this entire changeover system, a third party server was established in Hyderabad and all operators had to feed their database to this server on regular basis.
