Sequel to reluctance of TDP MLA

Officials make elaborate arrangements for the panel’s visit

Achan Naidu takes dig at project authorities

Srikakulam: The all-party committee, constituted to verify the shutters’ installation work of Vamsadhara project following allegations of corruption, has cancelled its scheduled visit to the site on Saturday due to TDP MLA Kinjarapu Achan Naidu’s reluctance to participate in the verification programme.

He took the decision as the project authorities have decided to take the panel members to the places of their choice and not to the ones chosen by the TDP MLA.

Besides, the MLA protested against the District Collector’s failure to depute a responsible officer to monitor the verification.

Superintendent Engineer of Vamsadhara project Dakshina Murthy has made elaborate arrangements to take the people’s representatives, officials and the media personnel to the project sites.

Two RTC luxury buses have been arranged by the project authorities to visit Muddadapeta, Upparapeta, Basivivalasa, Ravulavalasa, Polaki, Yetturalapadu, Kotabommali and Anjanapuram apart from several godowns where shutters and project materiel is stored.

However, the TDP MLA expressed his indignation at the project authorities for fixing up a programme to visit selected places where shutter installation work has been completed.

Mr. Naidu has contended that of the 500 works for which bills have been paid, shutter installation job is completed only at three to four project sites.

Work progress

According to him, Rs. 52 crores has been paid to the contractors even though hardly 2 per cent work is completed. Mr. Naidu had raised the issue at the Zilla Parishad general body meeting in the past which resulted in the announcement by District Collector N. Srikanth forming an all-party committee to verify the works sanctioned and the works completed.

Mr. Naidu told media persons that the project authorities facing allegations cannot be made a party nor have a say in the verification programme.

He alleged that the efforts were being made to shield the accused and cover up irregularities which occurred at the lower level.

Mr. Dakshina Murthy told newsmen at the Zilla Parishad hall on Saturday that agreement with the contractors was made for installation of shutters way back in 2006 but due to non-availability of funds, work could not be executed. He clarified that funds were released only in 2008.

Delay admitted

The contractors were paid bills only for the materiel they purchased and not for the installation of shutters. The bills would be paid only after the shutter installation job was completed. He admitted that works were delayed but declined to admit that irregularities had occurred in the process.

He said that the shutter installation works would be completed within two months and bills be paid only after the works were completed.

He stated that contractors would be paid bills on the basis of agreements made in 2006 and cost escalations would not be entertained.

He said that the materiel purchased was stored in several godowns.
