HYDERABAD: The State Road Transport Corporation will acquire 500 new buses every year to increase its fleet to cope with increasing passenger traffic.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy directed the RTC to increase its fleet at a review meeting here on Wednesday with Minister for Transport S. Vijayarama Raju, RTC Managing Director Dinesh Reddy and other officials.

The modalities of funding would be decided later in the Board of Directors meeting, Mr. Vijayarama Raju told media persons. At present the total strength of RTC fleet is 20,074, including 17,285 corporation buses and 3,419 hired buses. The RTC by increasing its fuel efficiency, total traffic income, earnings for kilometre and occupancy ratio consistently for the last three years, turned profitable. The increase in the fleet would not have an impact on hired buses.
