A blow to two political families

VIJAYAWADA: Saturday’s election results dealt a blow to the two main political families and long-time rivals in the city, as Devineni Rajasekhar (Nehru) and Vangaveeti Radhakrishna lost in Vijayawada East and Vijayawada Central Assembly constituencies, respectively.

Both the candidates made all out efforts to win the election and retain their hold keeping their future ambitions, but the changed electoral equations nipped their dreams in the bud. As they lost by thin margins to their nearest rivals, it gave a near shock to the followers of the two families.

In the 2004 elections, while Nehru emerged victorious from Kankipadu constituency, Radha entered the contest from Vijayawada East as a political novice and won from there. That sparked fears about a possible relapse of old rivalries between the Devineni and the Vangaveeti families. However, their stand-off was just limited to simmering differences, with Radha ultimately leaving the Congress to join the Praja Rajyam.

Nehru took this election as a prestigious one, as he wanted to groom the segment more for his son Avinash to take over in the next election. He made hard efforts right from the beginning of the electioneering, but to of no avail. Similarly, Radha and his mother Ratnakumari campaigned vigorously though their efforts did not bear fruit in view of the keen contest.
