Revenue authorities had withdrawn Rs. 20 lakh on Saturday from a bank

Police suspect the role of persons well aware of the topography of the building

HYDERABAD: Unidentified persons struck at the Mandal Revenue Office in Vijayanagar Colony at Asifnagar on Saturday midnight and escaped with Rs.7.60 lakh kept in a cupboard. However, Rs. 9 lakh cash kept in a separate cupboard was found intact.

Intruders entered the office by breaking open the main door lock and made away with the cash. Revenue authorities had withdrawn Rs. 20 lakh on Saturday from a bank, divided the money into three parts – two bundles in separate cupboards and the rest Rs. 3.40 lakh was disbursed towards pensions for old age, widow and the disabled.

Police alerted

On Sunday morning, accountant Raja Babu came to the office and found that the main door lock was broken and the papers and files ransacked. He immediately alerted the police. The MRO office was located in the ground floor and eSeva centre was on the first of floor. The theft occurred despite the presence of a security guard, according to police. “We have collected fingerprints from the spot and are investigating the case from all angles,” said ACP (Asifnagar) M. Venkateswar Rao. Police suspect the role of persons well aware of the topography of the building in the theft case.

The Asifnagar MRO, A. Ramu Naik, said the office was closed at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday and accountant Raju noticed the burglary on Sunday at around 11 a.m.

Police registered a theft case and picked up some persons for questioning.

In a separate incident, thieves broke into the house of a businessman Ashwin Kumar at Vasavi Colony in Saroornagar on Saturday night and took away gold and silver jewellery. Offenders gained entry into the house by breaking open the main door lock and stoke gold jewellery weighing 30 tolas and 1 kg silver ornaments. The incident came to light when Kumar returned home from his relative’s house in Nalgonda district on Sunday morning and found that his house was burgled, according to police.
