`65 lakh acres of ayacut to be developed'

GUDUR, (NELLORE DT), AUG.21. The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, has said that the Government is committed to developing 65 lakh acres of ayacut in the State during the next five to six years.

Talking to reporters at Gudur, 35 km from here on Saturday, he claimed that the State at present, had only an extent of 65 lakh acres of ayacut and in the interest of the farming community, there was every need to go in for additional development.

Pending projects

Regarding pending projects, he stated that priority would be for those which have been completed up to 50 per cent and the remaining would be taken up later. Mr. Rosaiah lashed out at the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Government for not according priority to irrigation and agriculture and stated that Congress party always stood for the promotion of these sectors.

"The party adopted the same stance right from 1956," he maintained, though there were the days when there was no aid from the World Bank and other financial institutions.

According to the Minister, while the State had got an annual revenue of Rs.50,000 crores, the TDP Government had not spent even Rs. 1,000 crores for irrigation sector.
