3G mobile service launch next week

Some 84 sites proposed in the city

VISAKHAPATNAM: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is giving finishing touches to launch third generation (3G) mobile service in the city next week.

At 51 sites, equipments have been swapped with 3G compatible systems. In total, 84 sites are proposed in the city of which 23 will be brand new.

“All required infrastructure for a full-fledged launch will be put in place by March 31 and 3G experience will be available at the Daba Gardens customer care centre within two weeks,” BSNL General Manager P. Nagaraju told reporters on Monday.

One has to use a 3G compatible handset for availing of the facility. BSNL 3G users could avail video chat, high-speed data transfer and other advanced facilities.

The handset must have two cameras and the users would be given an option for a video chat. The charges for the video chat will be extra.

The SIM cards both in pre and post-paid categories with different tariff packages will be available at customer care centres and other places shortly.

Amazing video service will be the main attraction.

Mr. Nagaraju also announced the soft launch of (internet protocol) IP TV shortly. The users must have multi-play equipment and initially the service would be provided to 5,000 customers.

The district has 21,000 customers with multi-play. The tariff, which will be competitive, will be announced shortly. During the soft launch, 15 channels could be accessed. Later on it would be increased to 50.

Ultimately, all channels would be accessed, Mr. Nagaraju said.

One has to invest Rs.4,000 or so on a setup box to watch TV from a telephone connection. TV channels could be seen either on computer or television set, he informed.

On the occasion of Republic Day, BSNL will launch Project Udaan for a door-to-door campaign in urban and rural areas including the agency belt for providing landline and broadband connections.

Applications and amount for the connection will be collected from the doorstep by BSNL officials during their visits.

Prospective customers could also get the connections by dialling toll free 1991 or sending SMS to 54141 through BSNL mobiles. Request for DATA cards would also be accepted.
