VIJAYAWADA: The Krishna district administration breached 32 fish tanks to ensure free flow of floodwater in the Kolleru Lake so that the surrounding areas will not face any threat of inundation in future. The operation was conducted at Juvvikanuma and surroundings.

The area in which cutting of tanks was carried out till now under the Operation Kolleru came to 14,000 acres as against the total 75,000 acres lying in the plus 5 contour. Fish tanks came up in most part of these areas in the last 10 years following drought.

Irrigation Superintending Engineer J. Rajendra Prasad said the breaching operation would be continued till the problem of inundation and flood was completely solved.

`Make it a tourist spot'

Staff Reporter adds:

ELURU: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader and former union minister Bandaru Dattatreya on Saturday favoured development of Kolleru lake as a tourist spot.

Addressing a press conference at Tadepalligudem, he asked the State government to constitute an official agency, Kolleru Development Authority, for the purpose. A joint committee involving the personnel from revenue, police, irrigation and forest departments should be formed for removal of encroachments in the lake more effectively.
