30 diarrhoea cases in Uppalapadu

Special Correspondent

GUNTUR: Thirty persons have fallen ill in the past few days due to drinking contaminated water from two bore wells in Uppalapadu village in Pedakakani mandal of Guntur district. The village, situated 10 k.m. from Guntur city, is known for the migratory birds’ sanctuary.

District Medical and Health Officer K. Suresh said one or two cases of diarrhoea were being reported from June 2, but the number had been increasing since June 9.

The district medical officials and the GGH conducted tests on the water samples from the bore-wells in the village and found contamination.

The two bore-wells have been ordered to be closed temporarily and chlorination done before they were put to use again. The DMHO said such cases were not reported from any other areas in the district. Rural Water Supply division of the Zilla Parishad has been asked to supply water to the entire village through tankers.

The cause of contamination was being investigated.
