BIJAPUR: Around 250 couple entered wedlock at a mass marriage function held at Lachyan village in Indi taluk to mark the 155th birth anniversary of Sri Siddalinga Maharaj, here on Saturday.

Despite claims by the organising committee that only majors were allowed to get married at the ceremony, there were allegations that many child marriages took place.

Congratulating the organising committee, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Basavaraj S. Horatti said such events go a long way in providing relief to poor parents, who otherwise find it difficult to get their children's wedding solemnised.

He called upon the newly wed to be ideal couples.

Echoing Mr. Horatti's view, Chennagiri MLA Mahima Patel said the mass marriage function highlights mutual love, cooperation and social peace and equality.

Janata Dal (Secular) State unit Working President H.D. Kumaraswamy said mass marriages help reduce social disparity to some extent. Such events need to be encouraged.

He lauded the role of mutts in north Karnataka in building a strong and healthy society. He said their contribution could never be ignored.

Shivamurthy Murugrajendra Swamiji of Chitradurga Bruhanmath felicitated Ballolli MLA R.K. Rathod, Indi MLA Ravikant Patil, industrialist A.S. Patil Nadahalli and others on the occasion.

Traffic flow was hindered as the narrow roads were hardly equipped for the movement of hundreds of vehicles, including those of the VIPs.
