`Territorial constituencies' for 168 societies being formed for co-op polls

GUNTUR: The Guntur district cooperative officials are engaged in the formation of the `Territorial constituencies' for all the 168 cooperative societies that will go to polls on October 22 and 26 in two phases.

There are 2.27 lakh members in 167 restructured Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies and one Andhra Bank Farmers' Cooperative Society, who will elect 13 members each as directors, who will elect a president and vice-president in an indirect, the District Cooperative Officer, C. Rama Rao, said.

Guntur district had 288 viable and unviable societies, which had been merged and 168 societies formed. There are 31 societies with less than 500 members, 65 less than 1,000, 23 below 1,500, while there are 16 societies with membership between 1,500 and 2,000, five societies have up to 2,500 and above 2,000 members.I

n 12 societies there are 2,500 to 3,000 members, four have between 3,000 and 3,500, five societies have a membership between 3,500 and 4,000, one has 4,500 members, while three societies each have membership between 4,500 and 5,000 or above 5,000. The societies would be divided into 13 TCs with number of voters in each constituency varying between 30 and 300. Five members will be nominated within 60 days of completion of election, but they will not have voting right. The `territorial constituencies' would be divided based on geographical areas within the society jurisdiction thus voters would be available at one place.
