RAJAHMUNDRY: Reporters of two vernacular dailies were tied to an electric pole and allegedly beaten up by a Congress leader and his supporters for exposing loopholes in Indiramma housing scheme in Rajavole of Rajahmundry rural mandal on Monday.

According to Y. Viswanath, correspondent of Andhra Jyothi, they were assaulted by a gang led by Kaccha Raju, a Congress worker, for reporting that he had whitewashed his old house and showed it as a newly constructed one under Indiramma. He and S. Venkatrao of Andhra Bhoomi on Monday tried to take photographs of the house when they were accosted by Kaccha Raju and others.

They were beaten up and tied to a pole for more than half an hour. Later, he (Vishwanath) sustained burns when he was pushed over a motorcycle silencer.

Mr Venkatrao managed to escape and informed the matter to his fellow scribes in Rajahmundry, who rushed to the spot to rescue Viswanath and admit him to hospital.
