HYDERABAD: The Ramchenna Reddy Commission of Inquiry looking into the death of farmers and weavers on Saturday said that 140 cases were reported from Ranga Reddy district in the last one year.

Speaking to reporters after conclusion of the three-day sitting here, Mr. Ramchenna Reddy said that out of 140 cases reported, 135 cases pertained to farmers' suicide and five to weavers' starvation deaths. The commission found that 14 cases among the list were not agriculture-related while ex-gratia was paid to 13 others. Mr. Reddy said the TDP had submitted a memorandum to the commission listing out 2,865 farmer suicides. The Government had asked the commission to examine each and every case. A total of 648 cases were examined so far, he noted.

He said the term of the commission had been extended till the year-end as against August 23. An interim report had been submitted to the Government in December last.

Enquiry into pending cases in the district would be taken up on June 9 and 10. He asked witnesses to depose before the commission.
