Swamy welcomes hardening of stance

CHENNAI April 15. The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, has welcomed the Centre's "reaffirmation" to the visiting Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, that India's demand for the extradition of the LTTE chief, Prabakaran, was "still active".

In a statement released here, Dr. Swamy noted that the hardening of India's stand on the banned organisation "follows the clear-cut U.S. decision last week that the LTTE will not be allowed to participate in any multinational conference on Sri Lanka, such as the one being convened early next month in Washington".

He said the LTTE should now realise that it was considered a "renegade, unwelcome outfit in important parts of the world. The best course in the interest of the suffering Tamil people of Sri Lanka, therefore, is for the LTTE to be wound up".
