Swadeshi Jagran Manch lauds CMP

NEW DELHI, JUNE 1. The United Progressive Alliance today received praise for its Common Minimum Programme (CMP) from an unexpected quarter, the Swadeshi Jagran Manch, which hailed the CMP as being reflective of the "aspirations of the common man."

The Manch also welcomed the disbanding of the Disinvestment Ministry and admitted that disinvestment was one of the factors responsible for the downfall of the National Democratic Alliance Government. The Manch, which had been critical of the previous Government's economic policies, said that it had "squandered away" the opportunity to serve the masses.Addressing a press conference here, the Manch national convener, Murlidhar Rao, said the people have given a mandate against the NDA's economic policies but it had also not been in favour of a single party. "People want a development model with growth and justice reconciled in it. People have voted for pro-agriculture, pro-unorganised sector and pro-employment policies. The NDA Government had ignored large sections of society," he said.

Mr. Rao said the new coalition Government has attempted to reflect the aspirations of the common man and balance the growth imperatives. "The CMP appears to disseminate the message that the Government is serious about the welfare of farmers, artisans, workers and the weaker sections of the society. It can be described as a good beginning but there is a long road to be travelled between promises and their implementation."

Responding to a query, he said the Left Front's performance in the recent elections had been impressive, with the Front having its highest-ever members in the Lok Sabha. "The Left Front's support is crucial to the new Government and it cannot escape from its responsibility. We expect that the Left Front will protect the common man's interests and defend the core national interest and in that we will support them," he said.
