Sugar mills to produce liquor from cane juice

MUMBAI MAY 22. The Maharashtra Government will permit sugar mills to produce liquor from sugarcane juice to enable them tide over problems of uncertainty in the sugar market in view of free imports.

The sugar mills' distilleries would need little modification to make alcohol directly from the juice, said the Chief Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, while briefing presspersons after the weekly Cabinet meeting here today.

The sugar mills in both the private and cooperative sectors are also being permitted to produce alcohol for mixing it in petrol to the extent of five per cent for making fuel for motor vehicles.
