JAMTARA, AUG. 1. The former Union Coal Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief, Shibu Soren, today charged the Bharatiya Janata Party with hatching a conspiracy to eliminate him.

At a public meeting in Kanchanbeda village, ahead of his surrender before a Jamatara Court here tomorrow, Mr. Soren said the BJP-led State Government was digging out old cases against him. "The district administrations of Giridih, Dhanbad and Jamshedpur are searching for me with non-bailable arrest warrants even after coming to know that I will be appearing before a court tomorrow."

The rally was held in the outskirts of the township where the administration had promulgated prohibitory orders in the light of his surrender tomorrow. Interestingly, Mr. Soren had launched his political career from this village and the Chirrudih massacre was a fall-out of his movement against usurers and those who had usurped the land of the adivasis.

Ms. Soren said he had always advocated the Gandhian path of ahimsa and had never instigated his supporters to violence or causing disturbance. "The adivasis are always armed with bows and arrows, but they had never used these weapons to hurt or loot anyone. If it had been so, as was being alleged by the BJP, the tribals would have destroyed market places and the exploitative order."

He said he had never evaded the law and wondered what the system had done all these 30 years about the case for which he was now being hounded.
