Small States outperform others on MNREGA front

Chhattisgarh provided maximum days of employment

While Chhattisgarh topped the States by providing maximum days of employment to 27,660 families, Tamil Nadu topped the list by employing 46.62 lakh people under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) in the first quarter of the current fiscal.

According to the official document available with The Hindu , Rajasthan created the highest 8.27 crore man days of employment in the first quarter of the fiscal. Rajasthan, which has an enviable record of utilising MNREGA funds to the maximum extent since its initial implementation, has provided 100 days work to 18,726 families till the end of July this year.

Although Tamil Nadu provided employment to the highest number of people in the country, it has provided 100 days of employment to only 1,507 families.

Poor show

When it comes to Karnataka, during the first quarter this fiscal, 909 families have so far been provided 100 days employment and, in all 4.16 lakh people have been benefited this year.

When compared to other smaller States like Jharkhand, the performance of the State is dismal with regard to creating and providing employment under the MNREGA.

Wider coverage

Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are much ahead of other States when it comes to providing employment to more number of people than the actual demand. In contrast to that, other States have not managed to provide employment to persons and families demanding it. For instance, in Chattisgarh, over 1.31 lakh households and 2.52 lakh people demanded employment, while it was provided to 1.91 households and 3.76 lakh people.

In Madhya Pradesh, against the demand for employment by 10.34 lakh households and 19.73 lakh people, work was provided to 10.94 households and 20.81 lakh people during the first quarter of the current fiscal.

In West Bengal, against the demand for employment by 12.50 lakh households and 16.75 lakh people, it was actually provided to 12.58 lakh households and 16.83 people.

Similarly in Uttar Pradesh, as against the demand for work from 32.02 lakh households and 38.11 lakh people, the Government managed to reach out to 32.09 lakh households and 38.12 lakh people.

The performance of Uttarakhand with regard to providing employment to people under the MNREGA was much better than other States. While 60,567 families and 70,241 people sought employment under the MNREGA, the Government reached out to 82,566 families and 93,445 people.

The reach across nation

According to the official document, 89,841 families across the country were provided with 100 days of employment till date, and 1.9 crore households and 2.73 crore people have been benefited by the scheme. The demand for jobs under the scheme have come from 1.88 crore households and 2.65 crore people in the country.



  • Tamil Nadu provided jobs to 46.62 lakh people in the first quarter of the current fiscal
