Signature campaign against sedition law

People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has launched a nationwide signature campaign to repeal the sedition law, as envisaged in Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, for its “draconian implications”.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Ramdas Rao of the PUCL said the campaign was envisaged in the light of widespread and arbitrary abuse of the law across the country against media personnel, human rights activists, political dissenters, public intellectuals, and even farmers and tribal people.

Through the nation-wide signature campaign, the PUCL hopes to collect one million signatures and present to Parliament for repealing the sedition law.

“Our endeavour is to go around Bangalore and collect signature from the public who are against this draconian law. It is unfortunate that even after sowing the seeds of democracy in the Constitution, certain provisions of the law like the sedition law reflect the vestiges of the colonial past.”
