Sexual harassment charge to be probed

NEW DELHI, OCT. 11. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has directed the just-constituted Pondicherry Commission for Women to look into allegations of sexual harassment and related acts at the Aurobindo Ashram. This will be the first case of investigation to be taken up by the Commission after its constitution this morning.

Talking to reporters here today, the NCW chairperson, Poornima Advani, said five sisters who have been living in the Ashram for many years now had approached the NCW with complaints of sexual harassment. Ms. Advani added that several others were facing sexual harassment but were scared to complain. "We subsequently asked the Women's Commission, headed by an advocate, Kamalini, to probe the allegations. The NCW will closely monitor the investigations and if need be, a team of NCW will also visit the Ashram."
