SC to hear T.N. plea on Cauvery on July 29

NEW DELHI JULY 26. The Supreme Court will hear on July 29 an application from Tamil Nadu for a direction to Karnataka to make good the shortfall in the release of the Cauvery waters during June and July. This application forms part of the new comprehensive suit filed by Tamil Nadu for a direction to Karnataka to implement fully the interim award of the Cauvery Tribunal.

A writ petition filed on behalf of 20 lakhs Cauvery delta farmers and agricultural labourers and an earlier suit filed by Tamil Nadu have also been listed for hearing on July 29.

In its application, Tamil Nadu submitted that the storage position in Mettur was very precarious and as a result the reservoir that used to be normally opened for irrigation on June 12 could not be opened this year. There was a deficit of 43 tmc ft of water during the year ended May 31. This could have been prevented if Karnataka, which had a storage of 59 tmc ft on December 31, 2001, had released waters during January to May as per the award.
