Relief panel for Sikhs meets

NEW DELHI: The first meeting of the committee on rehabilitation of the families of the victims of the November 1984 anti-Sikh riots was held on Friday.

It was presided over by Secretary (Border Management) in the Home Ministry D.K. Sankaran and attended by representatives from Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttaranchal, Punjab and Delhi. They gave an account of the steps taken by their States for relief and rehabilitation. Official sources said the committee was of the view that liberal assistance and rehabilitation packages should be given to the familiesas several of them had also been displaced during and after the riots. Some representatives said that an additional compensation for their rehabilitation would become the benchmark for extending similar compensation to the victims of terrorism. The representatives were told to return with more details at the next meeting to be held in about two weeks.
